This poster from 1949 was originally created in 1924 by Charles Loupot (1892-1962) for thecompany Canton Fourrures of Lausanne Switzerland. Canton moved from number 24 in Rue de Bourg to number 20, so they needed a poster with the updated address. The original design had a black background, but the Canton family thought that blue made the image more visible during winter. This poster was printed from the same lithographic stones as the one from 1924. The image shows a woman wrapped up in a big ivory fur coat, the spectator can almost feel the warmth and the smoothness of it. Loupot created an elegant and delicate Art Deco image that the company used for many years.

Canton Fourrures was founded in 1883 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, and in 1918 the company moved to Rue de Bourg in Lausanne. Canton is still operative, and it is one of the most renowned brands for fur in the French speaking part of Switzerland.

Canton commissioned the artist Charles Loupot to design this iconic image.Loupotis considered to beone of the best poster artists of the era, together with Cassandre, Paul Colin and Jean Carlu. Loupot studied art in the School of Fine Arts of Lyon and started his career in Switzerland. In the 1920s his fame grew, he started receiving better commissions and decided to move to Paris. Loupot opened his studio in Montmartre and designed posters for many brands. He createddifferent designs for many years for the aperitif company,St Raphael Quinquina that are outstanding examples of graphic design to this day.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
