  • The New York Times began in 1851, and has been continually printed ever since. This advertisement by E. Pickert is for the Sunday, Feb. 9, 1895 issue of the newspaper, nearly 120 years ago. The poster is designed to look as if it were a mosaic, featuring the iconic New York symbol, Lady Liberty with her torch. The torch traditionally symbolizes enlightenment, which is also a very fitting theme to associate with a newspaper.
