Ludwig Hohlwein is an important figure in the history of poster design. He was trained as an architect but changed his career to advertising at age 30 (in 1904). He was among first artists to reject the Art Nouveau style and helped to usher in the Art Deco style in Europe. Over his career he created over 400 posters, living and working in Germany. He used flat, bold images to characterize the figures in this graphic work. This vintage ad is one of a number of images he created for Marco Polo Tea.
