Grasse, the world’s perfume capital, is an idyllic town that sits on the French Riviera in the hills north of Cannes. The city is best known for its prospering perfume industry which began in the late 18th century. Grasse today houses the Musee International De La Perfume in its town center, with large perfumeries such as Fragonard, Molinard and Galimard offering tours of their production sites.

Grasse, the "Cite du Calme, Des Fleurs et Des Parfumes" (city of calm, flowers and perfumes) appears as a lush garden, where an elegantly dressed woman and her accompanying dog can be observed enjoying a book amongst the floral environment. In the background, the city of Grasse quaintly sits on a blue mountainside, beautifully depicting both the luxury and simplicity that the town has to offer. This French travel poster was sponsored by the Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer (French National Railway company).

The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français, SNCF, or the French National Railway Company is France's national state-owned railway company. The company was founded in 1938 and operates the rail traffic along Monaco, including the TGV, France’s high-speed railway. Its functions include operation of railway services for passengers and freight, and maintenance and signaling of rail infrastructure (Wikipedia).

Charles-Jean Hallo, more famously known as ALO (1882–1969) was a French painter, draftsman, illustrator, and photographer. Hallo attended Saint-Ignace College, going on to continue his studies in the arts at the Dijon École des Beaux Arts in France. He is best known as the creator of tourist posters for The French National Railroad and many other private railway companies. Hallo’s work demonstrates a skilled use of color, depth and perspective. His characteristic signature, ALO, appears on all of his illustrations, including this one.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
