The Hamburg-Amerika Linie [Line] was a transatlantic shipping enterprise established in Hamburg, Germany in 1847 and it operated through 1970. This c1935 poster promotes choosing the Hamburg America Line for a Mediterranean cruise in the Spring or Autumn. A bustling North African casbah is shown here, with the lively colors of the Medina guiding our eye to the harbor and ship beyond. The crisp black of the man's tunic leads our eye to the black tunnel that guides us to the water; a very effective visual device by the artist.

Before the First World War, the Hamburg-America Line was one of the largest fleets of commercial ships in the world. With so many of its ships damaged in the war years, Hapag (as it is also known) rebuilt its fleet in the '20s and '30s with sturdier, more efficient vessels that would help it re-brand as a company that was reliable and steady to sail with.

Albert Fuss (1898-1969) worked almost extensively for Hamburg-America and created copious posters for the company. His style is often focused on simplicity with elements of charm. Most of his posters were created during the interwar years.
