- This poster captures the beautiful Hotel Metropole on the Lake Maggiore in Pallanza. Located in the Piedmont region of Italy, the Hotel Metropole is still in operation. It is famous for its inclusion in Ernst Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms (1929), in which Henry states his intention to go see Pallanza with Catherine, as they row to Switzerland to escape military police. Although they never see the town of Pallanza from the rowboat due to the dark and stormy night, they do make a stop in Hotel Metropole to rest. This poster is created to promote the Simplon Railway. It connects Lausanne in Switzerland and Domodossola in Italy, via Brig, and includes the 20 km (12 mi)-long Simplon Tunnel, which opened in 1906, as a major part of it. Together with the Lötschberg Railway to its north, it forms the second most important trans-Alpine railway line in Switzerland. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
