This caricature from the 1930s depicts the late, great Swiss actor Michel Simon (1895-1975). He appeared in notable films such as La Chienne (1931), Boudu Saved from Drowning (1932), L'Atalante (1934), and Port of Shadows (1938). His life story began with hardship as he left his hometown of Geneva for Paris without a penny to his name, living amongst the other struggling artists of the notorious Montmartre. He finally landed light comedy roles before getting a big break with a major theatre company. By the 1930s he was a well-known film star in Europe.
