  • Sometimes referred to as the “Mardi Gras of the North,” the Dartmouth Winter Festival has been a highly anticipated event since its founding in 1911. This exhibition poster by Cremias advertises the 1993 Dartmouth Winter Carnival, whose theme was “Sun, Surf, and Snow.”

The celebration grew out of Dartmouth College’s student body enthusiasm for winter sports. The Winter Carnival is a 3 day event in February that has grown to include social events, fraternity parties, a polar bear swim, human dogsled races, jazz concerts, and more.

The event has been featured in pop culture since the 1930’s including film and literature.
