  • Marin Marie was a painter and illustrator known for ocean images with ships and sailboats. He was commissioned by a number of ocean liner shipping companies to create advertisements and promotional images. This example was created for the Messageries Maritimes, which was a French merchant shipping company from 1851 until it merged with another company in 1977. It shows the ship the “Champollion,” which sailed the Egypt-Syria line in the 1920s and 30s. It sailed during WWII, and at one point in 1940 was caught between Italian and British battle ships, but came out unscathed, and survived a few other close calls during this period. It was used to transfer troops during and after the war.
