This poster commemorates the 1996 Dartmouth Winter Carnival. The event is the oldest annual, collegiate winter festival in the United States. Members of the Dartmouth Outing Club organized the first Winter Carnival in 1910, hoping to promote recreational skiing, which was new to the area at the time. Participants from nearby colleges met in Hanover, New Hampshire to defeat the Dartmouth men at skiing and snowshoeing events. The Dartmouth carnival soon became one of the most celebrated college weekends in the nation.
