This rare poster was created by master poster artist, Roger Broders for the LMS rail line to promote their route to North Wales. Pictured here are the dramatic peaks of the Snowdon Summit, the largest mountain in Wales. A trainline has connected the mountain summit to the town of Llanberis since 1896. The mountain is a popular destination still today for hiking and rock climbing, and figures in Arthurian legends.

Roger Broders (1883-1953) was a French posterist and illustrator working in the early twentieth century. He is well known for his many travel posters, which feature scenic regions of France. He developed a simple design format that showcased the location with bold colors and minimal text. He often traveled to the locations he pictured via his sponsor P.L.M. railways. Broders's relationship with P.L.M. began through a connection with his wife, which would prove fortuitous for the artist. Although his posters are well known and highly sought after, he only produced less than 100 designs in his life.

The London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) was a British railway company. In 1923, under the Railway Act of 1921, 120 separate railways were required to group into four. The companies merged into the LMS included the London and North Western Railway, Midland Railway, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, several Scottish railway companies, and numerous other, smaller ventures. The LMS was the largest of the Big Four railway companies serving routes in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The LMS was also the only one of the Big Four companies to operate rail services in Northern Ireland, serving most major settlements in the region.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
