This poster by Hendrikus Wijdeveld is for the international theater exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum) in Amsterdam. The exhibition opened on January 21, 1922 and was one of the first major exhibitions of set, costume and theater designs of the Avant Garde movement in Theatre. The show had a major impact on staging practices in the Netherlands and inspired many international follow-up exhibitions. Matching the content of the exhibition is the posters' innovative graphic design which features bold contrast, strong line work as well as figural imagery. At the lower half of the image is a small figure with outstretched arms with text underneath that reads "Kunst aan het Volk!" (Art for the People).

Hendrikus Theodorus Wijdeveld (1885 – 1987) was a prominent architect and graphic designer of the Wendingen (upheavals) style originating in Amsterdam around 1918. Opposing the De Stijl group, the Dutch artist made his mark by founding, editing and creating most of the covers and layouts of the Dutch periodical titled Wendingen. Wijdeveld is well known for his bold, geometric and ornamental borders (Cooper Hewitt).

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
