It was founded in 1934 by George T. Baker in St. Petersburg, Florida. For most of its existence the company was headquartered at Miami International Airport, Florida. At its height in the late 1960’s and 1970’s,, National Airlines had a network of "Coast-to-Coast-to-Coast" flights, linking Florida and the Gulf Coast with cities along the East Coast and large cities on the West Coast. From 1970 to 1978, National, Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) and Trans World Airlines (TWA) were the only U.S. airlines that operated scheduled passenger flights to Europe. In January 1980, National Airlines was acquired by Pan Am and its routes and equipment were integrated into the Pan Am structure and National ceased to exist.

The artist Bill Simon created a series of lushly colored and detailed posters in the 1960’s for National Airlines featuring the various destinations that the airline reached. Unfortunately there is no further information available on Bill Simon. This particular poster was created to show a classic scene of passengers on a Caribbean cruise ship enjoying a game of shuffleboard. National Airlines flew to many Caribbean Islands.

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Born into a bourgeoisie family, his artistic pursuit was encouraged by his father, who was a well-known cartoonist. Villemot received training at the famous L’Ecole Paul, a school for poster artists founded and taught by famed poster artist Paul Colin. To many, he represents the end of the age when most of the poster designers are trained artists. As the world began to shift in the 1960s towards ad agencies and graphic design implemented by art departments, Villemot stood firm in his belief that the only way to advertise effectively "was to treat a poster as though it were a painting". His distinctive style was commissioned by many prominent advertisers, most notably Orangina, Perrier, and Bally.

To learn more about the career of Villemot, please follow this link: https://postergroup.com/blogs/the-ross-art-group-blog/the-work-of-bernard-villemot

This is an Original Vintage Poster.
