Aiming for simplicity, the bottle is the focal point of the poster with a blue to yellow gradient in the background. Chanel No. 5, the timeless and elegant scent was the first fragrance by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. The fragrance represents both the respectable and the demi-monde woman, a melding to signal a celebration of womanhood during the Roaring Twenties. The perfume was perfected in the late summer of 1950 by Ernst Beaux and is based in rose and jasmine scents. Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) was an American artist, film director and producer. Warhol was a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, where he tackled the integration of art, celebrity and consumerist culture in his works. Well known for his serigraphs such as his Marilyn Diptych and Campbell’s Soup Cans, Warhol also produced and directed his own experimental films such as \"Chelsea Girls\", created Interview Magazine and managed The Velvet Underground. Warhol was multifaceted in medium, using photography, film, sculpture, paint and printmaking to create his various works. Before becoming the art icon he is known as today, Warhol was a commercial illustrator. After moving from Pittsburgh to New York in 1949, Warhol designed store window displays and created ads for luxury brands such as Chanel and Lighthouse Footwear. The image is based off a story from a 1962 DC Comic, titled “Secret Love #83”. In the center of an image, a girl is swarmed by both water and emotion, seemingly about to drown. The speech bubble reads “I don’t care! I’d rather sink than call Brad for help!” The work by Lichtenstein was hand-painted and is an apt demonstration of the artists’ ability to imitate the process of mechanical print production. Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997) was one of the most influential artists involved in the Pop Art movement. The Pop art movement emerged in both the US and the United Kingdom in the mid to late 1950’s, with its aim focused on to presenting a challenge to the mainstream traditions of fine art. Lichtenstein’s paintings closely and purposely appropriate the imagery and style of comic strips. Through his works, Lichtenstein unveils an interest in solving pictorial problems as well as a rich dialogue within forms. His close consideration of the comic style reinvigorated the American Art scene and helped alter the history of Modern Art. René Vincent (1879-1936) was a French illustrator who was prevalent in the 1920s-1930s. He worked in an Art Deco style and became famous for his poster designs. Vincent had a design style of distorting perspective and dynamism. He was influential in the Art Deco movement in the period between the two world wars. Vincent studied at the Ècole des Beaux-Arts, at first he studied architecture, then changed to graphic arts and ceramics courses. He was also an illustrator for La Vie Parisienne, The Saturday Evening Post, L’Illustration and Fantiso, with most of his contributions to these magazines being fashion illustrations. He created many advertisements for Bugatti, Peugeot, Michelin, and Shell Oil Company. However, his most recognizable work is the circa 1920 Porto Ramos Pinto poster. Kina Lillet is an aperitif wine made from blends of Bordeaux wine, quinine and fruit liqueur, invented in 1887 by brothers Pierre and Raymond Lillet. The actual product being promoted is the cigarette paper made by the Le Nil Company. The elephant is their corporate logo and Cappiello uses a mixture of fine artwork and color blending to create this detailed image. In our era, this poster is especially attractive because of its desirable horizontal format. Joseph Bardou created a cigarette paper in 1845 titled J.B. which was quickly renamed to JOB. In the 1870’s Bardou’s cigarette paper began regularly shipping a large portion of supply to Egypt. With this large customer base, JOB renamed itself to Le Nil, after the Nile River and began using marketing tools that integrated iconic associations of Egyptian culture such as pyramids, palm trees and as seen in this poster, an elephant. The artwork features the classic 1937 Delahaye model 135 M amidst the backdrop of the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo. This poster commemorates the 1937 Monte-Carlo Rally, at which a competition version of the car won first place. The specific model in this poster was produced only in 1937, and it is believed less than 30 examples were ever made. It is not uncommon for this car to sell for upwards of six million dollars when it appears at auction today.Delahaye was in business from 1894 - 1954, and is heralded for creating some of the most beautiful (and now collective and expensive) cars of all time. This poster perfectly captures the elegance of not only the Delahaye car, but the lifestyle of those who are able to own and drive one. The couple enter their luxury car after an evening at one of the most famous casinos in one of the most elite locations in the world, their clothing further underlining their status. This is an elegant image that oozes of luxury and style.Pierre Fix-Masseau (1905-1994) was the son of accomplished French sculptor, Pierre Felix-Masseau. Fix-Masseau began his career as an apprentice to master Art Deco designer A.M. Cassandre, for whom he worked for from 1926 to 1928. This experience greatly impacted Fix-Masseau, who continued to work within the Art Deco style for the remainder of his long career. Cassandre's interest in foreshortening, heightened focal points, and flattened planes can be seen in Fix-Masseau's works. Fix-Masseau combined Cassandre's influence with his own mastery of perspective and intricate detail to create his own, distinctive style. Fix-Masseau is best remembered for his posters featuring railway and automotive themes. Princeton adopted a real tiger cub as their mascot, while Harvard used the real life figure of John the Orange Man to represent their sports division. Yale followed suite with the adoption of a bulldog affectionately named “Handsome Dan”. In 1889, crew and football tackle, Andrew B. Graves purchased the English bulldog from a New Haven blacksmith. The TBWA Chiat\/Day team said that Apple should be aligned with the creativity of personalities and people making an impact on the twentieth century. The “Think Different” phrase provided an opportunity to celebrate both the creativity of these people but also the distinctiveness of Apple in the computing world, responding to IBM’s historic campaign motto, “Think”. The campaign was swiftly approved by Apple, then begun with the television commercial, which first ran on Sept. 28 1997, followed by the print ads, billboards and posters.
