  • Cannes is very much the social capital of the French Riviera. Noted for its wonderful beaches and accompanying beach clubs, it is also the focus of the annual Film Festival. It is a coastal destination along the Mediterranean and its harbor is home to many marinas featuring some of the world’s most impressive yachts. Cannes is also a city of great dining, high end shopping, and lots of night life. This image by the artist Georges Goursat (1863-1934) who painted using the name SEM, shows an imagined view of the coastline partially obstructed by the lush foliage to be seen in Cannes. The bold letters, CANNES, imply the prominence and importance of the area.

SEM was known as a caricaturist as well as an illustrator. He was born into a family of wealth and many of his early works feature characters of the upper classes of society, a group that he knew personally. He illustrated their life style and habitats very well while also doing other subject matter including many posters during World War I for national causes.
