  • A promotional image published by the Seattle-based Alaska Steamship Company, showing one of their ships "along Alaska's sheltered seas." The Alaska Steamship Company came was founded in 1894 and stopped carrying passengers in 1954, five years before Alaska became America's 49th state. Ref. Swann Gall.
    The artist is Sydney Laurence (1865- 1940) and he was well known as a painter of Alaskan landscapes. Laurence was born in Brooklyn, New York and studied at the Art Students’ League in New York. He immigrated to England at  the end of the 1800’s before he left and went to live in Alaska for the remainder of his life.  Created a small number of posters as well as many paintings.
