  • In this poster from the 1930 International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition, we see an automobile racing neck and neck with a motorcyclist below. This streamlined, stylized Art Deco design portrays the automobile speeding along a top track, while the motorcyclist keeps pace on a lower track.

Hermann Kosel (1896-1983) was an Austrian poster artist and painter. He studied graphic design with Julius Klinger at the master artist's private advertising school. He went on to work in conjunction with several other prominent designers including Max Frey and Erwin Gibson, and in 1929, he began his solo career. Each year from 1929 to 1932, Kosel designed the poster for the International Car and Motorcycle Exhibition. These posters display the "wide breadth of his artistic capabilities. The styles changed playfully between Art Deco, New Objectivity and Constructvisim, perfectly corresponding to and capturing prevailing artistic themes" (Denscher p. 158). Wiener Plakat 164.
