The New York is Book Country was an annual event held in September that featured book sellers from throughout the area. This literary event was focused on promoting readership of books and to stimulate interest in collecting as well. The fair first started in 1979 and each year an important artist was commissioned to design a poster for that fair. Some of the significant artists who designed posters for the Fair are Maurice Sendak, Edward Gorey, Richard Scarry, and Charles Schultz. In this poster, we see the distinctive style of art that Keith Haring was best known for. His graffiti inspired art shows the highlights of the 1985 Fair.
Artist Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania. He moved to New York City in 1978 and began using the city as his canvas, making chalk drawings in subway stations. His art was eventually seen everywhere from public murals and nightclubs to galleries and museums around the world. He was also known for his activism in promoting AIDS awareness. He died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990, at age 31.
