Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962) was an American actress and model. Famous for playing comic "dumb blonde" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s, emblematic of the era's attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million by the time of her unexpected death in 1962.] She continues to be considered a major popular culture icon.
During the 1990’s the Schweppes Company in France used this image of Marilyn under license from her estate to promote their carbonated drinks. The image by an Anonymous artist recalls Marilyn Monroe in the movie Seven Year Itch where she is in a white dress standing near a subway grate and having her skirt lifted by the exhaust from the subway. It is a most clever use of the Marilyn Monroe image to attract the viewer and convey a sense of humor to the viewer and remind them of the enjoyment of drinking Schweppes and their well-known symbol “Schhh…!” .
