- The tiger is the mascot of Princeton University, located in Princeton, New Jersey. This poster was created in 1909 by Abigail Kellogg Hazard. The poster compliments a sister image for Yale University featuring their school's bulldog mascot, Handsome Dan. The crest of the University appears in the corner of the artwork. In the late 19th Century, the Ivy League Universities began to develop mascots to represent their school. Princeton adopted a real tiger cub as their mascot, while Harvard used the real life figure of John the Orange Man to represent their sports division. Yale followed suite with the adoption of a bulldog affectionately named “Handsome Dan”.Princeton's original mascot was the lion, however the tiger transitioned to the mascot status starting around the 1880's due to its orange and black school colors. The tiger was well established by the turn of the century, so much so that in 1911, the Class of 1879 replaced their previously commissioned gilded lion sculptures with a newly commissioned pair of guardian tiger statues, which now reside outside entrance to Nassau hall. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
