The Poulain Orange poster was created by Leonetto Cappiello to promote a chocolate with an orange flavoring that was sold by the Poulain Company of France. The is naturally attracted to the oversized orange colored horse running away with the little girl's chocolate bar. The bottom text declares "it is the best" and suggests " taste it and compare" . It is a very effective image in getting its message across to the viewer.
The Chocolat Poulain brand was one of the most renowned chocolate producers in France, founded by Victor-Auguste Poulain in 1848. It quickly became a household name, known for its high-quality chocolate products and innovative marketing campaigns. Poulain was a pioneer in branding, using posters, collectible cards, and illustrated advertisements to promote its products to families and children. The use of a foal (poulain in French) as the brand's mascot was a clever play on words, reinforcing name recognition while evoking imagery of vitality and energy.
Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. The typography is often minimalized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance.
