Borrowing some inspiration from the work of Lucien Boucher for Air France , the artist James Thiriar (1889-1965) created this very detailed graphic illustration of the areas in and around the Belgian Congo in order to promote travel to that region which was controlled by Belgium. The Belgian Congo was a Belgian colony in Central Africa between 1908 and 1960 in what is now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The artwork of this poster shows various residential areas of the Congo and also depicts the surrounding areas of the total country. Within the image are depictions of natives in their natural costumes and they are shown in vignettes of the regions. The serves to attract the eye of the viewer and highlight the many facets of this country.

James Thiriar , born in Brussels in 1889 and died in the same city in 1965 , was a Belgian draftsman , illustrator , painter and costumer known primarily for his designs of military uniforms . Wounded at the beginning of the First World War while fighting in the Civic Guard , James Thiriar joined the Belgian army in London where he made many drawings of the daily lives of soldiers at the front, published by The Illustrated London among others News . Thiriar started travelling to the Belgian Congo in 1932 to complete a series of illustrations of the area. His association with the Congo continued over another 20 years.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
