This charming poster was created in the mid-1950s by J. Clift artist to promote Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, India as a travel destination. The poster features a beautiful woman in Sari, a traditional garment worn by South Asian women, sitting in front of an Indian style window. It is one of a series of posters done in similar style for the various destinations reached globally by American President Lines. J. Clift was an artist who designed many posters advertising travel to both Thailand and Singapore. Unfortunately, there is little information on the artist.

The American President Lines was created in 1938, just prior to World War II, as a result of the renaming of the Dollar Steamship Lines which emerged from bankruptcy as APL. By 1940 the American Government commissioned 16 new ships, all to be named after American Presidents. The growth of the company continued for the next 70 years with American President Lines Ltd, along with its parent company CMA CGM, the world’s third largest container transportation and shipping company providing more than 80 services. APL operates a container-ship fleet, including 153 container vessels. Formerly a subsidiary of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), it is now a wholly owned subsidiary of CMA CGM, a global transportation and logistics company engaged in shipping and related businesses based in France.
