La Divorcee
La Divorcee
(80cm x 119cm)
George Dorival created this poster in 1911 to promote the comic operetta, La Divorce'e. The text describes La Divorce'e as a 3 act play with music by Leo Fall.
Leo Fall (1873-1925) was an Austrian composer who created music for both opera and operettas, commonly known as musicals. His work was translated and performed all over the world. Originally written in 1908 as "Die Geschiedene Frau", "La Divorce'e" in French, and "The Girl On The Train" in English, the musical was popular and was performed in London and New York.
The story revolves around a young actress travelling by rail who finds herself without a sleeping compartment for the night. A married gentleman offers his, but the two are accidently locked inside together. Although the event is innocent, the gentleman's wife learns of it and initiates divorce proceedings. Through the story, the couple reconcile with the actress falling in love with the judge overseeing the proceedings.
The artwork reflects the lighthearted spirit of the comedy production. Made over 100 years ago, the subject of divorce carries a much different meaning in popular culture today.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
