Few places in the world exude decadence like the Palace of Versailles in France. This poster by Pallandre utilizes Baroque styling to entice viewers to visit the palace by way of the Chemin de Fer de L’Ouest train line from Paris.

Located 12 miles west of the center of Paris, Versailles was originally built as a hunting lodge and escape from the city for King Louis XIII. His son, Louis XIV saw the land as the opportunity to expand his court to accommodate his lavish lifestyle. In 1682, the government was officially moved to Versailles, where it stayed until the French Revolution. This poster highlights the Trianon section of the Estate, which was built as a private residence for the King and Queen to escape the busy court life of the Palace. It is most closely associated with Marie Antoinette, who loved to spend time here and we can surmise it is her figure that is depicted in this poster in the main scene.

The early 1900s saw the invention of train travel as an affordable way for the middle class to travel and leisure became an affordable expense for millions of people. For the first time, people could escape the frenzy of Paris for a day trip, and Versailles became a popular travel destination. This poster points out that there are two different train stations in Paris that you can pick up the line to Versailles from.
