1952 Olympic Games Helsinki celebrates the 15th Summer Olympics held from July 19-August 3 in Finland. The poster was created by the artist, Sysimetsa, and features a copper-esque statue of a runner set in front of a portion of the globe highlighting Finland with the Olympic Rings above. The Olympics were founded in 1896 as an international sports competition held every four years. Helsinki had originally been chosen for the 1940 Olympics, but was delayed due to World War II. The 1952 Olympics saw the debut of many notable countries including the U.S.S.R., The People's Republic of China, Indonesia, and Israel.
Nearly 5,000 athletes participated in 149 events. The Soviet Union emerged as a major athletic power. The first gold medal for the USSR was won by Nina Romashkova in the women's discus throwing event. The Soviet women's gymnastics team won the first of its eight consecutive gold medals.
