This Original Vintage Poster is an advertisement for the Swiss Cigar company, Hediger & Co., promoting their Indiana Stumpen cigar. This bold image features an Indian chief with rich coloring and details. The company was founded in 1889 and remained in business until 1970. Native American imagery has long been associated with tobacco as it was the New World's gift to Europe.

This image is a fine example of Sachplakat, or Swiss object posters. It was printed using stone-lithography along with the precise technique and top-quality inks the Swiss are known for.

This poster was designed by Johannes "Hans" Handschin (1899-1948), a well-known and highly-collected Swiss Impressionist & Modern artist. Handschin’s body of work centered mostly on advertisements and tourism. He was a noted leader of the Basel Graphic art movement. His works are free from ornamentation and focus on flawless printing and rich color palettes.

The poster is mounted on heavy card stock, as it was intended to hang on the wall of a bar, restaurant, or liquor store. It is in excellent condition.
