This is the official poster for the 1936 Summer Olympic Games, which were held in Berlin, Germany. The idealized Olympiad figure, crowned with rings above his head, looms over the top of the Brandenberg Gate. This poster was printed with text in at least 12 languages, this piece is in German.
The 1936 Olympics were held at a pivotal time for the world at large. Awarded to the city before Hitler's rise to power, the Games became a showcase for the Third Reich on a global stage. The Games were seen by many athletes and global powers as a test against fascism, and is notably where Jesse Owens - the famous Black American track and field athlete - won the most gold medals. WWII would break out three years later.
Franz Wurbel (b.1896) was the artist of this striking image. Unfortunately, little is known about him.
This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in very good condition. There is minor chipping at some of the edges , not affecting hte overall image. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.
