This poster from 1944 was designed by Harold Von Schmidt (1893-1982) to promote a governmental campaign for saving gas. During WWII, the United States heavily promoted conservation of war materials such as metal, rubber, gas and food among others. The image shows a close up portrait of a wounded soldier, a very dramatic image to raise awareness on the importance of ration. Car clubs were created to encourage carpooling, and thus save gas.

Von Schmidt studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts and the San Francisco Art Institute, and by age 20 he had published his first cover illustration in Sunset magazine. He moved to New York in 1924 and established his studio in his house. Von Schmidt designed illustrations for many magazines throughout his career and also private commissions such as murals for the California Governor's Office and oil paintings for the US Military Academy at West Point. In 1944, Von Schmidt was recruited by the Air Force to become a war correspondent in Europe and Japan. He focused on depicting the small details of a soldier's everyday life.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
