This is a dramatic, minimalist series of France's famed Mont Blanc, framed between the silhouetted slopes of tree-lined hills. The graphic, zipper-like train track serves to both open up the mountain to view and lead the eye towards the focal point. Posted side-by-side, these three posters create a cinematic effect, a unique graphic concept among travel posters. (Hillion p. 214, Voyage p. 35, Alps 43, Art of Skiing p. 53, Affiche Art Deco p. 54.)

The artist, Georges Dorival, has created a triptych of images to portray the Mont Blanc vista in a minimalist fashion showing three times of day and their colors. The unifying theme is the stark beauty of Mont Blanc. The poster series was commissioned by the French National Railway PLM (Paris, Lyons, Mediterane’e - the three main hubs).

Justin Marie Georges Dorival, commonly referred to as Geo Dorival or Georges Dorival (1879 -1968) was a French poster artist. Unfortunately, there is little biographical information on him. In his career he created a significant body work in travel posters primarily for the different railroad companies in France. His artistic sense of design and proportions have made his work very appealing to poster collectors.

Please note that this is a set of three posters. Each poster measures 30" x 41".

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
