Au Grand Paris, Toulon

You'd be forgiven for thinking this poster was about sweets, given the literal translation of the text that reads, "confections for ladies". But make no mistake, the treats these women are excited about are the "latest" high-end Parisian fashion that can be purchased at the Au Grand Paris boutique.

Being able to purchase the cutting-edge designs of Paris in the Riviera town of Toulon would be an enticing sell for fashionable women in the area. Toulon is located over 500 miles from Paris, and even with the development of train travel in the late 1800s it would be considered an extensive journey. Toulon at the turn of the 20th century was an important military base, one from France ran most of their African colonization campaigns. It is not unreasonable to assume that many a Parisian wife would have been relocated to Toulon during this time period, creating a great consumer base for the Au Grand Paris shop.
