Bonal Gentiane Quina is an aperitif that has things in common with both amari and sweet vermouth. It is an infusion of herbs like gentian and chinchona bark (also called quina, the source of quinine) in a fortified wine base that was first made in 1865. Bonal is reddish brown in color, and moderately sweet. It smells and tastes strongly of red fruits like plums and cherries, but also herbs and licorice. The palate has a medium bodied texture, and has both the herbal bitterness of gentian and the chalky bitterness of chinchona intermixed with honey, plums and herbal flavors. The liquor is still available in the market till today.

In the poster, the artist wittily used a key in the stomach to show that the wine opens up the appetite. Possibly due to the popularity of this poster, the key also appeared on the label of Bonal Gentiane Quina.

Adolphe Jean Marie Mouron (1901-1968), commonly known as AM Cassandre, is one of the most influential poster artists of the mid-twentieth century. His work mixes elements of art deco, cubism and surrealism. Cassandre established his own advertising agency, Alliance Graphique. Along with his innovative art style, Cassandre also developed several typefaces for use in his advertising. In 1936, his posters were exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His images of speeding trains, ocean liners, and festive cocktails defined our vision of the period between the wars. His influence is still being felt today in current graphic designs.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
