The iconic figure of Uncle Sam has always been a source of patriotism in American political posters. In this 1942 WWII "Buy War Bonds" poster by legendary illustrator N.C. Wyeth, Uncle Sam looms largely over the battlefield directing American troops and bomber planes in a charge towards the enemy. Uncle Sam carries the flag of the United States, which blows in the wind to create a halo behind his head. This is the smallest format version of this poster.

The symbol of Uncle Sam dates to the real life figure Sam Wilson (1766-1854) of Troy, New York, who was charged with supplying meat to the northern United States military forces during the War of 1812. The image we commonly refer to as Uncle Sam was developed in the later part of the 19th century. Uncle Sam was most famously depicted by James Montgomery Flagg in his 1917 "I Want You" recruiting poster. The figure of Uncle Sam is prevalent in many beautiful posters from the Second World War, and are highly sought after by collectors.

N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945) is revered as one of the greatest American illustrators of the 20th century. He studied under Howard Pyle, and traveled to live among cowboys and Indians in the last years of the "old West." He often incorporated this first-hand knowledge into his many illustrations and paintings. He is most famous for his literary illustrations including The Last of the Mohicans, Robinson Crusoe, and Robin Hood, as well as his covers and interior art for McClure's, Saturday Evening Post, Scribner's and many popular magazines of the time. Wyeth's son, Andrew Wyeth, followed his father and had a successful career in the fine arts. He is regarded as one of the most important realist painters of the 20th century.
