The SNCF is the Societe Nationale de Chemin de Fer - The National Rail Service. Throughout the years, they commissioned prominent artists to depict well known destinations in France, thereby encouraging train travel by the French as well as by foreign visitors. In this 1950 poster by Herve Baille (1896-1974), the rugged terrain of the Basque Coast is on display. A couple explores the coastline by horse, watching over the country farmer in the woods and the busy beach scene beyond.
