This is a beautiful image created to promote the International Maritime Exposition held in Bordeaux, France from May - November 1907. We see one of the typical ships of that era bedecked with flags of the world to emphasize the participation of so many countries in the event. The crest of the city of Bordeaux as well as some of its scenic highlights adds more character to this beautiful image.
Antoine Ponchin (1872 - ?) was a painter and illustrator well known for his nautical scenes. Born in Marseille, Ponchin was influenced early by maritime life. He followed his father into a life as an artist, winning the prestigious Hors-Concours title and also becoming the official painter of the French Navy. His works fall into the school of Impressionism, and his treatment of light is highlighted in this pretty image.
