The Exposition Universelle of 1900, better known in English as the 1900 Paris Exposition, was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 14 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. The style that was universally present in the Exposition was Art Nouveau. The fair, visited by nearly 50 million, displayed many machines, inventions, and architecture that are now nearly universally known, including the Grande Roue de Paris Ferris wheel, Russian nesting dolls, diesel engines, talking films, escalators, and the telegraphone (the first magnetic audio recorder). In this poster sponsored by the Trans -Siberian Railway we see the highlights from their showcase at the fair. Located in the Trocadero garden, visitors could experience all the sights to be seen along this railway. Featured are a Chinese Theater, a restaurant serving Russian and Chinese food, and a moving image show that highlights sights along the train route.

Built in 1891, the Trans -Siberian Railway is the longest in the world, running from Moscow to the Russian Far East. It connects to Mongolia, China, North Korea and is still being expanded today. This luxury train service was built with sleeper cars (wagons-lits) and amenities such as a library and gym. More luxurious than the Orient Express; the railway was designed in accordance with the Russian Tzar’s taste, reflecting the style of Louis XVI and Louis XV.

This poster is designed by Rafael de Ochoa y Madrazo (1858-1935). Born in Spain, Madrazo studied in the School of Fine Arts in Paris, later returning to Spain to study with his uncle perfecting his portraiture technique. Much of his best work is held in private collections and museums in Paris.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
