This image of an idyllic seascape is brought to life through vibrant color and the use of dramatic perspective. In the post-World War II era, all of the countries of Europe were vying for more tourism revenue as a means to economic recovery and in this image we view the vacationers enjoying some of the attractions of the seaside resorts. The French Riviera, with destinations including Nice, Cannes, and Saint Tropez were all part of this push to attract visitors. Since that time the French Riviera has grown in population as well as popularity.
Bernard Villemot was born in 1911 in Trouville, sur-Mer, France. It is in the style of Matisse that Villemot found the ultimate way in which to transform posters from product placement into true works of art. Between graduating school and the end of the War, the world had changed. Villemot and his contemporaries in France found themselves creating art in a country consumed with a spirit of rebuilding and re-invigoration. This high-energy spirit can be seen in all of Villemot's posters from the 1950s until his death in 1989.
