A coquettish modern woman (likely meant to depict the "big city") twirls her parasol, unaware of the target placed dead-center.

This poster was created by the C. Burckardt printing firm, and is part of a larger series of posters that were produced during the 1880s and 1890s. The company was based in the Alsatian town of Wissembourg, along the French border with Germany, and was also known for their cutout puppets, puzzles for children, educational charts, and religious depictions. These posters were created during a time that the Alsace region belonged to Germany, when the town was still called Weissenburg. All posters in this series have been printed via stone lithography, in multiple panels.

While the subject matter of these posters vary from common Alsatian characters, to wily animals, to figures plucked from the Commedia dell'Arte, all have a spirit of playfulness that cannot be denied. They visually represent a time of relative peace along the French and German border, between the Franco-Prussian and First World Wars, in which these images would bring much joy to carefree adults and children alike. Perfect for all areas of home and office. You can view the entire series here: https://postergroup.com/search?q=wissembourg

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted and linen backed. We have decided to minimize the amount of restoration of this poster, in order to preserve the integrity of the image. This allows for minor tears and handling along the edges, and toning of the paper in areas. This image is of the actual piece; please zoom in to closer inspect it. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
