Boxhill is the highest hill of North Downs located in Surrey, England. The hill is lush with box and yew trees growing on the slopes of the summit. Boxhill, a natural escape, offers visitors historic sites within the green flora such as Broadwood’s Folly, Labilliere’s Grave and the Weypole Stepping Stones.

The artist of this poster, Margaret Calkin James captures the unfiltered beauty of this English countryside location. The poster features the River Mole at the bottom of the poster with an abundance of stylized trees in shades of green comprising the rest of this serene image.

This poster advertises for London Transport, known now as the London Underground which is a public rapid transit system serving the London region and parts of Buckinghamshire, Essex and Herfordshire. The early transit lines were owned by several private companies and merged in the early 20th century, combining services to firstly form London Transport in 1933. London Transport is now known as the London Passenger Transport Board.

The symbol which appears on this poster for Boxhill is the current logo for the London Underground, however given this posters origin in 1935, one can read "London Transport" in the center.

Margaret Calkin James (1895-1985) was a calligrapher, graphic designer, printmaker and watercolor painter. James attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1913 to 1914, concentrating in calligraphy and winning the Queens scholarship during her final year. James is best known for her posters for the London Underground and London Transport where her identity as an artist remained unknown to her viewers. Her most popular works are the Kenwood House and Boxhill posters for London Transport.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
