This festive image is titled - Danse C’est Fou or Dance, It’s Crazy. It was part of a campaign based on the theme of It’s Crazy – C’est Fou. The campaign was aimed at promoting Perrier Sparkling water as a happy beverage to be consumed when you are out and about and having fun.

The artist of this poster, Bernard Villemot (1911-1989) was one of the foremost poster artists in the 1960’s and 1970’s, known for his innovative design and use of color. Born into a bourgeoisie family, his artistic pursuit was encouraged by his father, who was a well-known cartoonist. Villemot received training at the famous L’Ecole Paul, a school for poster artists founded and taught by famed poster artist Paul Colin. To many, he represents the end of the age when most of the poster designers are trained artists. As the world began to shift in the 1960s towards ad agencies and graphic design implemented by art departments, Villemot stood firm in his belief that the only way to advertise effectively "was to treat a poster as though it were a painting". His distinctive style was commissioned by many prominent advertisers, most notably Orangina, Perrier, and Bally.

Perrier was founded by Dr. Louis Perrier, who purchased the Les Bouillens spring in 1898 located in the Southern France. He operated a commercial spa there where he sold his bottled water. He was persuaded to sell the spring to John Harmsworth, who closed the spa and rebranded the company as Source Perrier. Perrier seized on the British and U.S. market’s affinity for French products, and described itself as the "Champagne" of mineral water.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.
