This powerful wartime poster by SEM highlights the global impact of WWI. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the United States in 1886 as a symbol of liberty and friendship, rises high above the Atlantic from the viewpoint of France. This poster was created to promote subscribing to the French National Credit Bank's loan program. The Statue of Liberty was just as important a symbol for France at the time as it was for the United States. Liberty continues to be one of the most important principles of French identity. This poster was created the same year the United States entered the war, and it was meant to illustrate the deep bond between the two nations which had just become battle allies yet again.

The artist Georges Goursat (1863-1934) worked as a caricaturist and poster artist using the name SEM. He was born into a wealthy family and through his art he depicted many pursuits of the privileged members of French society. His work as a caricaturist was especially notable in his early career and he depicted members of High Society at work and play. As his style developed, he became more versatile as evidenced in this poster. During World War l he served as a war correspondent and this poster was created during that tenure.
