Rina Ketty
Rina Ketty
(79cm x 114cm)
Rina Ketty (1911-1996) was a superstar in 1930s and 1940s France. This poster was created to promote her latest single with Pathe, "Sombreros et Mantilles". Ketty rose to fame in the years leading up to the outbreak of WWII, when many European countries took influence and inspiration from one another. "Sombreros et Mantilles" was a love ballad about a French woman who leaves her lover in Spain, and it borrows heavily from flamenco beats.
Ketty became famous the same year of this poster, 1938, for a song called "J'attendrai". The song ("I Will Wait" in English) became a smash hit during the early years of WWII and was particularly loved by homesick soldiers at The Front. Rina Ketty was born and raised in Italy, and came to France to become a star. Her Italian-accented French was considered extremely charming, and many of her songs leaned on Italian, Spanish, and pan-European references.
Jean Dominique van Caulaert (1897-1979) was a highly regarded artist of the Art Deco movement. He is best known for his portraits of French entertainers from the cabaret scene, from Edith Piaf to Josephine Baker.

If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
