The Roman Forum is one of the most celebrated archaeological sites in the world. Dubbed "The Heart of Rome," the Forum for centuries was the epicenter of public speeches, trials, processions and gladiator matches. This poster commissioned by PLM Railways (Paris - Lyon -Mediteranee) advertises travel to Rome by way of Mount Cenis, a group of mountains that connect the French Alps to Italy. The image features soft tones and warm colors as the light of golden hour gleams onto the ancient architecture that Rome has to offer.

PLM was a French railway company that began between 1858 and 1862. The PLM (Compagnie des Chemins De Fer de Paris a Lyon et a la Mediterranee) operated chiefly in the south-east of France, with main transit lines connected to Paris and Cote d’Azur through Dijon, Lyon and Marseille. (Wikipedia).

Justin Marie Georges Dorival, commonly referred to as Geo Dorival or Georges Dorival (1806-1968) was a French poster artist. Unfortunately, there is little biographical information on him. In his career he created a significant body work in travel posters primarily for the different railroad companies in France.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
