In this bright yellow poster for the Sonora Radio company, we get a glance of what entertainment looked like in the late 1950’s. Using photomontage, we see a black and white photograph of a happy family set on the upper right corner, excited about the new Sonora Radio. In the center of the poster, a group of Sonora Radios come closer and closer to the eyes of the viewer. The french text on the poster, from top to bottom translates to "From the sound system, to the 3D frequency modulation 4 speakers, those who know require a Sonora radio."

In 1908, the Sonora Chime Company in New York City patented its system of chiming bells to be put into its clocks and the company began using the motto "clear as a bell" for their products. This was just one of the major changes that the company would go under in years to come. As time progressed, the Sonora Company did its best to stay relevant in the market. The Sonora Chime Company was reincorporated as the Sonora Phonograph Company under founder George Brightson in 1913.

In 1923, Sonora phonographs were being sold in two stores in France. Nine years later, the company expanded to Europe and opened an affiliate branch in France in 1932. The French Sonora Company never exported any of their products to the United States.

By 1938, the Company, under the Articles of Incorporation, was re-established as the Sonora Radio and Television Corporation. The corporation dissolved in 1958.

Unfortunately, there is little information on the artist of the poster, Arestein.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
