This bold poster was created for the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the famous Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland. Opened in 1882 as the longest tunnel in the world, the Gotthard Tunnel is almost ten miles long and cuts through the Alps. It was an integral part of a master plan to connect the North Sea with the Mediterranean by rail, and is still considered a major feat in transportation history. It was built and is still maintained by Swiss Federal Railways, the company that commissioned this poster by Willy Trapp in 1932.

Willy Trapp (1905-1984) was a Swiss-German poster artist who created many wonderful designs for advertising campaigns, mostly travel posters like this one.

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in very good condition. It has been archivally restored in the bottom text portion of the poster with some light touchup work. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters
