In the post-World War ll era, Air France was rapidly expanding its routes for commercial air travel. This expansion was heavily promoted by the effective use of original posters created by great artists of the era. In this clever design created by Jean Carlu, we see various destinations that Air France services throughout Europe. It is a graphic menu of enticing regions for people to visit.

This poster for Air France was created by the French graphic designer Jean Carlu (1900-1997). Carlu originally began training as an architect but turned to commercial art after an accident in which he lost his right arm. In 1919 he started his career as a poster artist, becoming a leading figure in French poster design. His posters started in the Art Deco style and changed with the influence of Cubism. He came to New York in 1937 to organize an exhibition at the World’s Fair, where he remained until after WWII. It was during his time in the US that he designed one of his most famous posters America’s Answer! Production. In 1953 he returned to France and continued his work as a poster designer and consultant for many companies, including Air France and Firestone France.

This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

  • If there's anything you want to know about posters, vintage or more modern, there's nothing Mr Ross doesn't know. His open and friendly manner helps one to choose the most suitable material whether for decoration, investment or whatever... I can't recommend him highly enough.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
