This poster, commissioned by Air France to promote travel to Europe shows a flower in the center of the image featuring a different European nationality in each petal. In the bud of the whimsical flower, an artist can be seen painting the Eiffel Tower, encircled by a German woman holding a stein, a Spanish man dressed in the regalia of bullfighting and many other wonderful representations of the European countries.

Air France was formed on 7 October 1933, from a merger of Air Orient, Air Union, Compagnie Générale Aéropostale, Compagnie Internationale de Navigation Aérienne (CIDNA) and Société Générale des Transports Aériens (SGTA). Among these airlines, SGTA was the first commercial airline company in France, having been founded as Lignes Aériennes Farman in 1919. At the time when Air France was formed, the constituent members of Air France had already built extensive networks across Europe, to French colonies in North Africa and farther afield. During World War II, Air France moved its operations to Casablanca (Morocco). As of 2013 Air France serves 36 destinations in France and operates worldwide scheduled passenger and cargo services to 168 destinations in 78 countries. It served as France's primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM.

Posters have always been essential to Air France’s communications. It has one of the greatest collections in the world with over 1500 posters created by the most famous illustrators. Air France posters are usually striking, with few words, and depict destinations as dream-like and air travel as making dreams come true.

Herve Morvan (1917-1980) was a French poster artist and designer best known for his posters for Perrier in 1950. Morvan’s work offers a playful property to the world of posters with his jovial and animated subjectivity. His fun and colorful style can be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what age.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
