In this stylized image created in 1953 for American Airlines by Edward McKnight Kauffer we see the elements of patriotism that are synonymous with Boston. The American flag along with the image of the Revolutionary Soldier remind the viewer of some of the history of the City of Boston and they serve to promote travel by American Airlines to get there.

American Airlines is a major airline based in Fort Worth, Texas. The company was founded in 1926 as a union of more than eighty small airlines and is the world’s largest airline. American Airlines is a founding member of Oneworld Alliance, the largest airline alliance in the world. Through this partnership they are able to coordinate fares and services with Airlines around the world. In 2001, they acquired the well-known Trans World Airlines (TWA). They still operate today out of ten major hubs in the United States.

Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) studied painting at the California School of Design before moving on to Paris, at the behest of his benefactor, Joseph McKnight. He attended the Armory Show in Chicago, which had a major influence on his artwork. At the start of World War I, Kauffer moved to England where he produced over 140 posters for the London Underground. His poster designs are known for their versatility in style and technique including futurism, cubism, and vorticism.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
