With a ground and air battle unfolding in the background, Dwight Eisenhower takes charge in this 1944 war bonds poster by Boris Chaliapin, entitled "Back 'em Up - Buy Extra Bonds". Designed with an interesting monochromatic palette, the text urges the viewer to buy war bonds to support Eisenhower's troops. Dwight D. Eisenhower is most well known today as the 34th President of the United States, holding office from 1953-1961. He would have been a household name at this point of the war as General Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe. Note the five stars on his cap, an indicator of his prestigious General status.

Boris Chaliapin (1904-1979) was a Russian born painter and illustrator who primarily lived and worked In America during his career. He is most wellknown for his cover designs for Time Magazine, which span three decades.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
