A dazzling coastal escape unfolds in Roger Broders’ vibrant depiction of Bandol, a seaside resort nestled between Toulon and Marseille along the Var coastline of southern France. Towering palm trees frame the composition, providing a lush foreground that opens to a gently curving bay. Along the golden beach, sunseekers stroll enjoying the shoreline just in front of a row of anchored sailboats and a sleek motorboat resting in the calm, sapphire-blue waters.
Promoting Bandol as a year-round destination — "Hiver Été" (Winter and Summer) — this poster was commissioned by the PLM (Paris–Lyon–Méditerranée) railway to attract travelers to the French Riviera in all seasons. With its gentle climate, protected harbor, and renowned vineyards, Bandol became a favored retreat in the early 20th century for those seeking leisure and refinement by rail.
Roger Broders (1883–1953) was among the most celebrated travel poster artists of the Art Deco era. He was known for his clean lines, vibrant palettes, and stylized compositions that elevated both place and travel experience. Though he produced fewer than 100 posters in total, Broders’ work remains iconic — capturing the golden age of European rail travel with precision and elegance.

  • Just wanted to say thanks for the poster. You sent it on Thursday and it was delivered the following Monday (nearly quicker than it took us to get home) to our house in Perth, Australia. We have just had it framed. We love it; it goes perfectly with the room.

  • The Ross Gallery has the best selection of vintage posters I have ever seen. Seriously, if you are in the market, they are the people. And, they know everything there is to know about the posters' provenance.
